Attack of the Dizzies

I have been suffering from acute labrynthitis for almost 20 years now. Although my attacks have never been as bad as the initial one, it is always very difficult when it hits. I usually have no warning. That's what happened to me on Tuesday. I couldn't drive home from work it was so bad. One of the gentlemen in the office drove me home and my boss followed in my car. Thankfully, I live a few blocks from work so it's not as bad as it sounds. I didn't make it to work yesterday but I did go today, even though I felt like crap. I couldn't take more time off and I'm taking Serc and Gravol so hopefully things will be even better tomorrow.

I haven't really gotten much knitting done but I did mange to get a few rows done. I finished the Rose Trellis Lace sample before the attack and most of the Tyrolean Medallion. I was able to block them this morning. I really like the way both of them came out. I love the effect of knitting into the back of a stitch every row like you do for the Tyrolean Medallion (k1b and p1b on the wrong side is more like it). I think I have about 4 samples left to work on and then I will go back to other knitting.

I don't know if it is available in Canada but in the US there is an over-the-counter drug call Meclizine that treats labrynthitis. It is marketed at Dramamine 2.

There is a physical therapy treatment for this, too. Its some sort of vestibular readjustment. Your MD would know what it is. I haven't had it done but it has come highly recommended to me. I have had labrynthitis since a head injury at 17. Makes ya' miserable.

Interesting. I wonder if the accident I had back in 1987 was the cause for the first attack I had. I had whiplash but I never connected the two. It was around that time I had my first attack. I was on Meclizine when I was in the US. The stuff works wonders. When I was living in Potsdam, NY I think I needed a prescription for the Meclizine. I asked the doctor here about it. Serc is betahistine hydrochloride from what I have been able to find on the net. I don't think it is the same thing as Meclizine and I don't think that Meclizine is available in Canada. If it is over the counter in the US, I will get some when I am in NYC in May.

    Hi Rochelle,
We missed you on Tuesday. I got there at 6 hoping to get a table but you know the people beside me never got up, so at 7 we moved across the room.
I have been waiting for your post all week to see how you were.
I hope that you feel better.

Hi Rochelle, No betahistine hydrochloride is not Meclizine. Meclizine hydrochloride is the generic name. When it was by prescription only it was called Antivert. For many years now it has been over-the-counter as Dramamine II (be careful because there is a Dramamine I available that is the original Dramamine and does not work the same as Mecline). Anyhow, if you are in the States, you can pick up either the Dramamine II or get the cheaper generic of Meclizine in any big pharmacy.

Also, do ask your doctor about the physical therapy vestibular readjustment - I don't remember the proper term but he would know it.

Also, have you considered seeing a good chiropractor? They can work wonders. Don't go to just anybody though. Ask friends/coworkers for recommendations because they are not all created equal!

My labrynthitis also resulted from a head/injury. Good luck, Kate
